Nursing Leadership in Time of Multiple Crises

On November 3, 2021, Rita Akiki, Nursing Director at Aboujaoudé Hospital, presented her abstract entitled: "Nursing Leadership in Time of Multiple Crises" at the ICN Congress 2021 organized by the International Council of Nurses. 

Mrs. Akiki stated that " Lebanese nurses are facing multiple challenges. The financial crisis is worsening since April 2020, the powerful non-nuclear explosion of Beirut blast on the 4^th of August have devastated the country and the cases of COVID-19 pandemic are still increasing. This reality leads to an emerging exude of qualified nurses which is a crippling disaster for the health system, especially for the hospitals. The early career nurses entering the field are also planning to migrate and they are demotivated. In order to face this challenge and overcome the qualified nurses’ shortage, a new strategy is initiated based on the “Nursing Cross Training Program”. It aims to empower nurses and fulfill the emerged needs in addition to nurturing the leadership skills of the bedside nurses that are crucial to provide direct patient care. The frontline nurses (n=70) engaged in this project declare that their sense of leadership is increasing and they were more able to accommodate with the change and with the new requirements of the daily nursing care. The nurse’s satisfaction measured revealed 80% (n=56) of the nurses satisfied by acquiring new skills and competencies. Many advantages for nurses are depicted and a decrease in the nurse or patient load is very tangible. Nursing leadership is the main component of nurses’ empowerment and enhancement of the resilience of the early career nurses. It affects the nurses staying in the profession and facing rapidly and efficiently the lack of qualified human resources".
